Interreg Europe third call
KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm with five partners from Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Austria is working on a proposal to the Interreg Europe third call on the topic ‘Balancing bioenergy and ecosystems services for a low carbon and climate resilient circular economy in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR)’.
The project aims at implementing a tool for policy makers to estimate the consequences of renewable energy production on the ecosystems services, and social activities in the Baltic sea area. The role of local government is very key in the project implementation. Two local agencies/municipalities from Estonia and Latvia are already on board.
Focus on bio-economy
The project will contribute to evaluate diversified and optimal bioenergy portfolios exploring sustainable energy solutions that better address the link between human and natural systems. The project will support policy makers while making choices related to the implementation of a circular bio-economy, helping them understand trade-offs as well as local and regional impacts on resource efficiency and climate resilience.
The identified tasks include:
- Analyze the condition of the bioenergy and ecosystems services in the pilot municipal areas using Geo-Wiki participatory approach
- Transfer and test the applicability of strategic results in pilot areas in countries
- Develop strategies for local bioenergy implementation plans in conjunction with maintaining ecosystems services and addressing climate strategies at the municipal level
Overall, the project contributes:
- Bottom-up revision of the spatial interface between production of bioenergy, bio-products and ESS, including data complementarity at local level;
- Innovative planning tool for addressing economic, social and spatial dimensions of the bio-economy, and increasing public participation in decision making;
- Understanding of the impacts of the bio-economy on climate resilience, including identification of hot-spots that require special attention to avoid disruptive change.
