The Union of the Baltic Cities took an active part in the 9th VASAB Conference of Ministers 1-2 June 2023 and Expert’s Conference on the updated VASAB Vision 1 June 2023, both in Wismar.
During the 9th VASAB Conference of Ministers responsible for Spatial Planning and Development of the Baltic Sea Region the VASAB Vision 2040 for the territorial development of the Baltic Sea Region was endorsed.
Four sets of action described In Vision 2040 are as follows:
- A diversified and fresh Baltic Sea Region
- Vibrant Pearls of all sizes
- Resilient Patches of ecosystems and unique areas at sea and land
- Cooperative sea and land planning systems
It has been envisioned a Baltic Sea Region where the next generations will enjoy a high quality of life based on our mindset shift towards sustainability in all aspects of life, on more cohesion, integration, solidarity and macro-regional cooperation, and on a wiser use of technology for the common good of places and people. Adequate policies and joint actions help in coping with challenges across various levels, sectors and borders.
The Ministers have discussed the complex challenges facing the Baltic Sea Region and exchanged on recent advancements in spatial planning and development. The heads of national delegations and invited organisations presented their statements that included key topics mentioned in the Vision 2040 and possible future actions how to make them reality.
The Union of the Baltic Cities’ statement was given by Ms Paulina Szewczyk, Chairperson of the UBC Planning Cities Commission. It was communicated that The UBC Strategy 2022-2030 and the Vision 2040 have the same mindset toward the sustainable, safe, resilient and inclusive Baltic Sea Region. Possible future actions indicated in the Vision 2040 correspond with the aims of the UBC. The role of the UBC is to implement practical steps on a local level through collaborative work, targeted activities and taking part in high-potential programmes and projects. It was also emphasized in the UBC statement that the most important task for today is to create and maintain a sense of togetherness that is needed more than ever. This will result in good cooperation, networking and a constant exchange of experience.
The Chairperson of the Planning Cities Commission also took part in the panel discussion at the Expert Conference on the updated VASAB Vision 1 June 2023 in the session “Reflections on the VASAB Vision 2040 from spatial planning research and practice” and discussed about possibilities of implementing the vision and making it reality from the viewpoint of urban planning practice.
