THE SEA BEGINS HERE!

The coastal cleanup campaign will take place on September 8, simultaneously in all countries bordering the Baltic Sea, making it a coordinated effort for a cleaner environment.

The sea begins here! In our hearts and minds, in our homes and cities, from every stream by which we live. (G.Bučas)

The team of the “Save The Baltic Sea” hiking expedition, which embarked from the Lithuanian seaside on March 11, 2024, invites people from countries around the Baltic Sea to come together on the seashores on September 8 at 12:00 PM (local time.)

The Baltic Sea is among the five most polluted seas in the world. Its preservation is essential for improving the ecological health of the sea, supporting marine life, and ensuring the well-being of millions of people living in the surrounding countries.
On the first weekend of September, there will be a joint coastal clean-up to celebrate Baltic Sea Day.

The initiative is a continuation of the campaign organized by the community “Atgaja” and the Reform Movement “Sąjūdis” in September 1988. Then, people from all over Lithuania gathered on the Baltic Sea coast and joined hands to form a human chain and draw attention to the critical ecological situation of the Baltic Sea. The chain extended through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. From then on, the Baltic Sea Day is celebrated annually on the first weekend of September. We are delighted that one of the founders of “Atgaja,” S. V. Pikšrys, will join the initiative to maintain historical continuity.

By then, the hiking team will have covered over 4,000 kilometres and reached Finland. They will join everyone gathered around the Baltic Sea and organize a beach clean-up with the local community.

The objectives of the campaign:

Promotion of environmental protection, the development of ecological ethics and awareness, and the fostering of interregional and international cooperation.

Here are some sustainable tips:

  • Bring garbage bags and reusable gloves. Dispose of the collected garbage responsibly.
  • Go to the beach by public transport, bike, or rental vehicle. When traveling by car, cooperate with your family and friends.
  • Avoid using disposable dishes such as plates, cups, utensils, or straws during the picnic.
  • After the event, check if you have not left any of your belongings behind.
