Cultural Cities Commission meeting & Nordic Days participation

The Union of Baltic Cities Cultural Cities Commission (UBC CCC) will gather in Kaunas, Lithuania, on 21–22 April 2026 for its annual on-site meeting. Hosted by the City of Kaunas and organised together with the current Chair City Espoo, the meeting will bring together cultural professionals, municipal representatives and partners from across the Baltic Sea Region to strengthen cooperation and shape the network’s future direction.
This year’s meeting focuses on implementing the UBC Cultural Cities Commission Action Plan 2026 and advancing its long-term strategy. As the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region’s Policy Area Culture updates its objectives and the EU Culture Compass progresses, the commission is adapting to this evolving policy landscape. Members will work together to develop a shared vision that reflects the changing role of culture in building resilient, cohesive and sustainable cities.
Over the two-day programme, participants will explore how arts and culture can strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging, support youth participation and foster creativity as a driver of urban development. The meeting also provides a platform for cities to exchange best practices, share expertise and strengthen the role of culture within the UBC network.
The gathering in Kaunas is closely connected to the city’s annual Nordic Days, a week-long initiative highlighting cooperation between Kaunas and partners across the Nordic region. Taking place from 20–26 April, Nordic Days 2026 will feature concerts, exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, literary events and educational activities across the city. As part of the programme, UBC CCC members will also join the International Educational Forum “Development of Social and Pedagogical Innovations in Education” on 22 April, exploring how culture, creativity and education can equip young people with future skills and cultural literacy.
The programme includes a workshop on the commission’s strategy, a guided visit to the newly opened Kaunas Science Island Museum, a concert by the Kaunas State Choir featuring works by Grieg and Čiurlionis, and a reception hosted by Vice Mayor and President of UBC Mantas Jurgutis. Participants staying longer will also have the opportunity to join school visits and discussions organised for Nordic Days guests.
The meeting marks an important step in strengthening the commission’s work and expanding collaboration across the Baltic Sea Region.
