Culture evening: The working environment at Hasseldalen’s Iron Shipbuilding

2026-08-26 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Welcome to the lecture with historian Jakob Haavik Tønnessen who will tell about what it was like to work at the shipyard in Grimstad around the year 1900.

When you think about maritime history in Southern Norway, and perhaps especially in Vikkilen at Grimstad, you probably think about white sails and proud wooden ships. But around the turn of the century, there was no longer demand for newly built wooden ships. At Fevik, they added as known to build ships of steel, but also quite close to Grimstad city centre, steamships were built for a short period of time. This is the story of the shipyard workers who were employed at Hasseldalen’s Iron Shipbuilder (1899-1903). How did they work? Who were they? What did they make?
