Department of the National Museum of Palanga burgomaster Jonas Šliūpas, together with Aušrininkas Dr. Jonas Šliūpas presents a virtual exhibition “Echoes of houses beyond the horizon: the Journey of the Šliūnai family of 1944”. As at that time, so now people are forced to leave their homes because of the war. In the summer of 1944, in the run-up to the second Soviet occupation, it was people from Lithuania, today – from Ukraine, the Middle East or other conflict zones, looking for asylum in Europe. Times and countries differ, but the same human experience remains: loss, longing, hope. The history of the family of Sludges reminds that every retreat is not only a geographical, but also a spiritual path in order to preserve one’s self. As then, so now people are accompanied by the same questions: what to pick up, what to leave, how to preserve identity and hope?
