Julian Rachlin conducts Dvorák
In September 1892, Antonín Dvorák was offered the directorship of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York. In addition to his teaching duties, he found time to compose some of his best works. The 9th Symphony drew inspiration from American folk music and African-American spirituals. The symphony, entitled “From the New World”, was first performed at Carnegie Hall in 1893, and was received with standing ovations and rave reviews.
The Czech master’s brilliant and wonderfully melodious cello concerto is a favorite among audiences and musicians. The work is interpreted by the super-talented Austrian cellist Julia Hagen, who tonight is Kilden’s guest for the first time.
