Merimee, who wrote a novel about Seville Gypsy, did not even suspect that in the 21st century – in the entire Western cultural world – there will be no person who would not have heard of Carmen. Georges Bizet, his immortal opera, incredibly romanticized her image. Gypsy Merimee is much simpler and more prosaic.
