Once a year, the pre-Christmas lights on the Warnow and Baltic Sea transform the historic Rostock city center between Neuer Markt and Kröpeliner Tor into the largest and one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in northern Germany. Time-honored town houses and churches – stone witnesses to Rostock’s splendid history as a Hanseatic city – look down on a colorful market. The delicious smell of mulled wine and Christmas cookies, Rostock smoked sausage, baked bananas and other delicacies wafts in the air.
