Robert Icke’s “The Doctor”
“The Doctor” is a “very loose adaptation” written in 2019 by British playwright and director Robert Icke of Austrian playwright Arthur Schnitzler’s famous play “Professor Bernhard” (1912).
Dr. Ruth Wolff, the head of the clinic and chief physician, is a strong personality who has overcome challenges in both her professional and personal life. However, everything changes one day when a seemingly mundane incident sparks a confrontation between medical ethics and religious beliefs, and the conflict quickly takes on the dimensions of a witch hunt. Thus, the renowned doctor finds himself alone in the middle of a public trial, during which he also has to face the skeletons in his closet.
