Alvar Gullichsen: Cosmos
Alvar Gullichsen is a long-time visual artist, musician and producer. For the past ten years, he has been painting spatial paintings that trace transcultural repetitive forms. For Gullichsen, geometric shapes and patterns are universal and belong to no one, and he sees many similarities between different cultures and eras. His cosmic take on modernism is radical, as it contains a lot of esotericism, transcendental philosophy, mysticism and psychedelia. The exhibition features early cartoon-themed paintings and reinforced plastic sculptures, gouache paintings made in the Villa Karo artist residency of the early 2000s, large-scale and modular geometric paintings from the 2010s, and GNARS (Gullichsen-Nyqvist Art Systems) sculptures made in collaboration with Klaus Nyqvist. In the exhibition, humorous and more serious works are juxtaposed in an eclectic way. The final point of the exhibition is the future-oriented Dissolving Patterns series, where Gullichsen dismantles his previous style and lets compact geometric shapes dissolve into the landscape, the cosmos.
